With the release of the brand new Avengers End Game movie this week I could not pass the opportunity to tell you about a visitor we had in the studio. Next weekend Portsmouth holds Comic Con at the Guildhall and one of the guests is the cosplayer, Paul MacDowell, Paul came to me for some promotional shots of him in his fantastic and super realistic Iron Man costume.
It was a very surreal day for both me and the kids seeing a full sized, life like Iron Man in the studio. Watching Paul get into his suit was tiring, we do not realise how hard these things are to put on, let alone wear for some time. Under the studio lights Paul was shall we say, perspiring profusely. The suit itself is very heavy and comprises of numerous components. But once it was all together it looked amazing. We tried to get Paul, sorry Iron Man, to do the super hero landing pose but unfortunately due to the complex parts of the suit it was not possible to give him the flexibility we see in the movies.
I wanted very clean well lit shots of this once in a lifetime shoot, we chose a white background to start with using 3 lights to illuminate both him and the background but we made sure we kept every little detail and looking back at the shots it looks like I shot an action figure, they came out that good. Then we decided to mix it up a little and placed Iron Man on a black background and backlit him and used a smoke machine to create something a little special.
We wanted to capture an action shot that looks like he is in the middle of a battle, the lighting and smoke looked stunning on their own, but we then took the image into photoshop for a little magic adding some effects with particles flying around him and lighting his chest piece and hands. The final outcome is this:
You can follow Iron Mans journey at his instagram page @Tnd_ironman or if you want you can actually go see him in the flesh or suit at Portsmouth Guildhall on the 4th and 5th of May 2019.
